Redeeming gift card balances

By default, the POS application redeems gift card balances in cash only. Depending on store policies, retailers can configure the POS application to enable more tender options for gift card balance redemption.

When integrated with the Verifone Point payment solution, the POS application checks if the payment solution or the PIN pad is online before proceeding to redeem the gift card balance. If the payment solution or the PIN pad is offline, the POS displays an information message and cannot complete the gift card cash-out. Configurable features

The POS application can be configured with the following features.

  • Define the maximum cash-out amount for gift cards and allow the customer to cash out an amount that is greater than the defined maximum amount.
  • Refer to the following options:
  • Enable the POS to automatically cash out the remaining gift card balance after tendering in a sales transaction. Refer to the following option:
  • Enable the POS to transfer the remaining balance amount of gift cards to debit and credit cards. For more information, refer to Tender Definitions.
  • Prevent the POS application from displaying the Call Credit Department screen when authorization is needed. Refer to the following option:

The following steps describe a gift card redemption on a POS application configured to display Credit and Debit as tender options.

To redeem gift card balances, follow these steps:

  1. Look up the balance of a gift card. For more information, refer to Looking up gift card balance. The application displays the gift card balance on the Gift Card Inquiry screen.

  2. Select the gift card item, and then select Redeem. The application displays the Gift Card Refund Tender Menu screen.

    Note

    When the POS is integrated with the Verifone Point payment solution and the POS is offline to the PIN pad during a transaction, an information message that the PIN pad has lost its connection is displayed. Do one of the following:

    • Select Retry PIN Pad. If the PIN pad responds, follow the normal gift card swap flow and complete the transaction. If the PIN pad does not respond, the POS stays on the Gift Card Inquiry screen. The associate can retry the process.
    • Select Void Transaction to void the transaction.
  3. Do one of the following:
    • Select Cash. The application displays the Change Due screen.

    • Select Credit or Debit. Follow the instructions displayed on the PIN pad.

    The application completes the transaction by printing the receipts.
